After Bedtime

Before shooting, I brainstormed different forms of characters and scenes as preparation for the Stop-motion animation. Monochromatic colors emphasize strangeness while saturated red creates a highlight that builds the tension. My intention behind this project was to experiment with different genres in filmmaking.

Through jotting down an overview of the plot -- including camera language, changes in expression, character movements, and the appropriate soundtracks in each scene -- I prepared my art direction, ensuring that the visual effects of the final project convey the theme thoroughly. Through this storyboard, the audience could glimpse at the storyline -- the way the girl turns on the TV after her mother leaves the room, how she encounters odd-looking creatures in different scenes, and her fear and anxiety throughout the experience.

This image shows a complete Stop-motion animation of the horror story. The process includes preparing puppets, filming, and editing. I drew the materials -- characters and furniture -- with watercolor, colored pencils, and charcoal. Then, I filmed the animation on a 48 x 27 cm sized black paper with a wide-angle camera set on a tripod. To ensure that the film went smoothly, I was attentive in moving the characters frame by frame and controlling lighting and the camera’s position. Some of the challenges that I faced were accurately measuring the size of the characters in proportion to the frame and correctly labeling the sequence of the characters based on where they appear in the storyboard.
